Dreams

From Jho's Weblog

The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challengedus to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up herentire being. She said, "Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?" I laughed and enthusiastically responded, "Of course you may!" and she gave me a giant squeeze. "Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?" I asked. She jokingly replied, "I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of kids.." "No seriously," I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. "I always dreamed of having a college educationand now I'm getting one!" she told me. After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends.

Every day for the next three months we would leave class together andtalk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this "time machine" as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.

At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor. Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, "I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know." As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, "We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it! There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets." She concluded her speech by courageously singing "The Rose." She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives.

At the year's end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.

REMEMBER, GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY. GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL.

Ako ay isang bulaklak ng santan.

(Excerpt from Peyups)

Hindi ba nga sabi nila, the way to a man's heart is through his stomach and the way to a woman's heart, is through flowers.

"This is quite an interesting topic.

Dahil kung hindi, hindi kita kakausapin for the rest of our college days. Hmmm... maganda ang sunflower. Favorite flowers ko iyan, sunflower ba?"

"Maganda ang sunflower. Yellow and bright colors... gaya mo na palaging masaya.

Ano ba namang klaseng association iyan? Ok I get it, santan... ordinaryo, simple, palagi mong makikita kahit saan..."

“Hmp, madamot,” sambit niya sabay irap.

Mahirap siguro maging Diyos.

Kinakanta ng Hoobastank ang “I’m not a perrr-fect perrr-son….”

“Boss, saan kayo?”

Ang konduktor, naniningil ng pamasahe.

“Southmall, galing PGH, estudyante.”

“E wala talaga akong bayad e!”

Aba! Gising pala ang mokong.

“Ano?

“Ha?

Naiintindihan mo ba iyon?”

Tulala ang bata.

Isa. Dalawa. Tatlo. Apat. Lima.

Anim. Pito. Walo. Siyam. Sam-….

“Ang sungit mo naman. Madamot ka na nga, masungit pa. Mabuti pa yung katabi kong babae kanina, binigyan agad ako ng kulangot. Wala nang ‘Bakit? Bakit?’”

Grrrr.

Tulala.

Isa. Dalawa. Tatlo.

Apat. Lima. Anim.

Pito. Walo. Siyam.

Sampu.

Where do you blog? [specify blog host]

Ako ay nagbloblog sa blogspot ng google.

why did you choose that host?

how often do you blog?

Dati halos araw-araw. Ngayon eh at least once a week siguro.

when did you start blogging?

Noong April lang.

how did you find out about blogging?

Sa barkada ko na si Dowa.

what makes blogging different from a written journal?

what time do you blog and why?

how many blogmates do you have?

Sa ngayon, anim.

whose blogs do you visit everytime you are online?

name the top 5 blogs you've read and what makes them so different if not special?

In no specific order….

Bonifacio Paper.

Diaries of Jose Rizal.

Noam’s “Founder’s Frustrations”  blog

The Wonder Woman

what topics, subjects, issues do you like to blog about?

which site[s] do you consider most helpful to bloggers?

Wala talaga akong alam eh. Ano ba?

aside from the tagboard, what other things does your blog have?

Site Meter tsaka piktyur kong pogi.

what makes you read someone else's blog?

Pag nakakatawa….at nakakaiyak. In short, nakakabaliw.

what do you do to attract other bloggers to read your blog?

where do you blog? [specify blog host]?
Blogdrive of course, it’s the best blog host by far for me. With all the host I’ve been with this is were I stayed the longest .

why did you choose that host?
I could easily add stuffs, edit layouts, and plus the coolest tool ever – tag board!

how often do you blog?
As much as I can, to catch up with my new found friends.

when did you start blogging?
I’ll just count when I started sticking with blogdrive, say February of this year.

how did you find out about blogging?
You know what, I don’t exactly know. None of my older friends knew about it actually.

what makes blogging different from a written journal?
I got a lot of thoughts on my mind, it’s easier for me to just type it in. But it’s nothing sacred that’s why I posted it too.

what time do you blog and why?
6am when I get to work, time to time in between work, or if I don’t have any movies to watch or books to read I do it after work. I barely blog you see? Hehe.

how many blogmates do you have?

Hmm, a lot. Don’t know the exact number.

whose blogs do you visit everytime you are online?
Lucy, Jan, Emong, Andre and Chris.

name the top 5 blogs you've read and what makes them so different if not special?

Lucy, loved her tagalog poems and her deep thoughts.

Jan, love her God’s daily word and same with Lucy, her thoughts. I guess why we all get along, aren’t we ladies?

Emong, love his funny way of blogging and stories about penoy in Buendia.

Andre, love his comic strips and his own cooking styles.

Chris, he’s pretty much my male counterpart. Go figure.

what topics, subjects, issues do you like to blog about?

Anything, just whatever comes to my mind.

aside from the tagboard, what other things does your your blog have?
[e.g hit counter, horoscopes. Etc]

- calendar

- lyrics

- word for the day

- culture trivia

I tried to keep it simple, with less graphics as I can.

what makes you read someone else's blog?
Entertaining and of course, substance and style of expressing their thoughts. What I can’t stand are the drama queens and jerks.

what do you do to attract other bloggers to read your blog?
I get good references from good bloggers and I do my rounds time to time.

beverly

where do you blog? [specify blog host]
My blog, <a href="
http://lovebevvyjustme.blogdrive.com/">Honey, I'm Fabulous</a> is located at Blogdrive.

why did you choose that host?
I love the features Blogdrive offers that so many other blog sites don't, like the tag board and access to edit the templates.

how often do you blog?
2 to 3 times a week, sometimes more depending on what's going on, what mood I'm in and how much I have to say about something.

when did you start blogging?
Around March of 2005.

how did you find out about blogging?
Several friends have blogs so I thought it would be a good idea to have one of my own.

what makes blogging different from a written journal?
I'm a single mom and work full-time. Also, I type really fast so it's easier for me to blog so I can type as I'm thinking. If I try to write everything I'm thinking I usually get discouraged. It's not as fun as blogging and sometimes I need feedback.

what time do you blog and why?
No particular time, whenever something comes up.

how many blogmates do you have?
I have several "blogging friends" now including Kai (Hi!!)

whose blogs do you visit everytime you are online?
I don't visit every time depending on how busy my life is, but I do visit most of my friends at least once a week.

name the top 5 blogs you've read and what makes them so different if not special?
Garnet's Breathing Room, Goddessing, The Open Door, Abby Normal and Ginger's Dish are some of my faves because they are all blogs by intelligent, warm women. I love reading other women's views on different things.

what topics, subjects, issues do you like to blog about?
Whatever gets me stirred up~ politics, human rights, being a mom, things about family, a variety.

which site[s] do you consider most helpful to bloggers?
Hmmm . . .

aside from the tagboard, what other things does your
blog have? [e.g hit counter, horoscopes. Etc]
Ask Kai, I'm always changing things around. Right now I have a hit counter, a daily quote and lots of links.

what makes you read someone else's blog?
I'm always curious when I come across a blog with an interesting name.

what do you do to attract other bloggers to read your blog?
I belong to several webrings, cliques and listings, and I also blog hop a few times a week. I always leave a message so they are curious to visit me too.
